Plustek OpticFilm8100

Rating: 4/5 ★★★★☆

Slide scanner
Price £220

The Plustek Opticfilm 8100 follows on from the 7000 series replacing the 7400 model. With this latest release Plustek have stuck with the still incredibly high optical resolution of 7200dpi and concentrated on upping the scan quality.

Which they seem to have done very well with an improved DMAX of 3.6 along with the inclusion of the updated and improved Sliverfast SE plus 8.

It’s this software update which is the real upgrade, with Silverfast SE plus 8 not only moving to a much improved modern interface but also improving features like the the highly praised “multi exposure” mode, which works by scanning at a high then low exposure and combining the two images to give improved dynamic range. The software also provides an extensive choice of colour correction options which comes into its own when scanning items like the trickier Kodachrome transparencies.

As with previous models the 8100 uses a similar well-built plastic casing and takes up a small footprint on the desk, the simple design taking slides and filmstrip loaded into holders at the side of the machine.

Scanning at full resolution (especially with all the extra enhancement features from Silverfast turned on) can take a while; sometimes over 5 minutes. While the ability to scan at full res will certainly be useful on occasion, the normal user would expect to see times of around a minute for a 2400dpi scan, Plusteks seem to have always concentrated on quality over speed.

Overall a great dedicated slide scanner that will produce excellent detail and clarity for a reasonable price tag.
