The Nikon Coolscan 9000 ED is currently the highest model in the Coolscan range, capable of scanning not only 35mm slides and film but also the medium format 120 and 220 along with 16mm 6×7, 6×9 and 6×4.5 electron microscope film.

The other technical difference from the 5000 ED is the addition of a third row of CCD sensors which enables a very high image quality but doesn’t improve the speed (presumably because of the bigger diameter lens used) The scanner is capable of some extremely high quality results with all the excellent features found on the Coolscan range that will tweak and improve the images (Digital ICE, ROC, GEM and DEE). It’s a brute of a scanner not only in terms of quality but also its size is substantial at 20”deep, 10” wide and 8” high and a weight of 9kg.

In terms of quality you can’t get any better without using a drum scanner, the sharpness and clarity is excellent and with all the enhancement features, your image will probably end up looking better that when you first took it!

The weakness of the product seems to be the medium format slide carriers which are particularly flimsy, the only real solution to this seems to be upgrading to Nikons  FH-869G glass slide holder (expensive!) that holds the larger film flat. If you do have a lot of medium format film to scan this may be the only option but certainly if its only 35mm film you need the 5000 ED is much better suited.

Overall most customers will currently find the Coolscan 9000 ED far too expensive, but this only goes to prove just how good the product is; now they are not being manufactured prices have more than doubled in some cases.
