Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED

Rating: 4.75/5 ★★★★¾

Price £2000 (Used)

The Super Coolscan 5000 ED represents the mid-range model in the Coolscan range, with the biggest difference from the V ED model being the introduction of a second line of CCD sensors that result in a very quick scan time of 20 seconds at the full 4000 dpi optical resolution.

This very high resolution coupled with the 16bit  Analog/Digital Conversion per colour means a greater dynamic range with a huge amount of detail as well. This is the scanner for the professional or the user that demands the very highest quality images.

With scans at 4000dpi, the resolution is very comprehensive but it’s all about the quality; of which the 5000 ED has plenty. With features such as ED glass used in the lens and the ability to conduct up to 16 passes of the slide, (obviously not all slides demand this amount of attention but nice to know it’s possible). Another feature that works well for over or underexposed images is DEE (Digital Exposure Extender) which will bring detail to the shadows and highlights and reveal what is so often lost on other scanners. The Light source is provided by the very stable and accurate proprietary LED technology that insures a very even light with no warm up time and any risk of heat damage, (pretty standard for this price range). As far as colour reproduction, the enhanced colour management system used in the scanner will collaborate the colours displayed on your monitor and ensure what you see is what you get when you print, which is an essential feature especially in a professional environment, as monitors can be out of calibration.

The scanner comes with all the extra acronymic features you would expect: Digital ICE (for scratches and dust) ROC (for faded colours) GEM (to reduce film grain) DEE (as mentioned before for enhancing light and dark areas). Another good point is Nikon produce some great automation accessories which are an essential purchase if conducting large scale scan jobs, the Slide feeder SF-210 will take up to 50 35mm mounted slides and the SA-30 will allow you to feed a roll of film to be scanned.
This scanner is a really a very well built and capable machine that would be perfectly suited to a professional environment: High resolution, very accurate colour reproduction, sharp and even scans along with speedy scanning make the 5000 ED a highly recommended product.
