The Coolscan V ED, is the entry level product in Nikons well known Cool scan range which unfortunately is no longer being manufactured; although you can still find them for sale in certain places on the internet.

The scanner is very well specked out and supplies the kind of quality you would expect from Nikon, with the Extra-low Dispersion Nikkor lens (that’s what the ED bit is for) providing high colour saturation and contrast along with helping to produce the super clear images.

The Coolscan range is widely seen as the best performing consumer scanner range and the Coolscan V certainly performs very well, with a 4000 dpi optical resolution and 14 bit Scan capability’s it can deliver extremely detailed results. The single line CCD sensor setup will take about 38 seconds to scan a slide and the machine is also capable of scanning colour negatives very well. With the correct adaptor you will be able to load filmstrip but the product doesn’t support the multi slide feeder or the roll film adaptor that is compatible with higher models, meaning it’s not ideally suited for the professional user.

The CoolScan V ED is designed to be very easy to use with a one touch image preview and a simple interface and an enhancement list containing all the branded features such as Digital ICE4, ROC and GEM among others, if you want to “set it and forget it” the scanner will do all the retouching and enhancement automatically for you.
